This installation is exhibiting at the courtyard in Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) .

Erik Satie said that the music is just an aerial "vibration" and he insist on Ambient music.

His belief led unique method of composition which largely differed from traditional ones.
He composed structure according to his rules.

For example he experimented to arrange musical notes like consecutive wallpaper patterns.

CIP developed original repetitive sound output system through Satie's unique composition approach.
We focus on computer repetition system as well as characteristics of physical space.

It's interesting that computer repeats completely same way in every times.
Fortunately, we got the unique expansion of acoustic process,
though the every process has followed completely same way and without any intentional programming.

three functions, recording, analyzing, and playing data are run by a computer.
acoustic characteristics of ycam's courtyard and noise of the space also affect sound of "Vexations".

The recording part is to make acoustic sound into digital sound data file.
The analyzing part is generation of automatical score(midi) file from sound data.
The playing part is to playback using generated midi data above.

The system cirucurate a sequence of "Vexations" both digital and analog. Through bi-directional converting between two different data types alters "Vexations"'s sequence.
Also CIP is a device let us be perceptible what is happening in computer.

Detail of repetition process

Running system is quite simple, just record, analyze, and play.

At first loop, recorded sound file, which was by the piano of seibold plays. In this moment, playing vexations acoustic? is recording through the microphone with sorrounding noise.

After second loops, recorded previous loop is automatically analize to score data as midi. This convertion is generated by the software "採譜の達人(japanese)".

Finally computer play next vexations by generated score data, using recorded whole mono piano sound data. Computer also print a score at a time.

just repeat this program through 840 times.

after second loops, sound is changing cause of the computer system by and by.
Cause visitor's voice or environment noise including vexations repetition.
loop of note data transfar to sound(noise) data and reverce process continue 840 times.

Notations of vexations consist of three parts, theme and two variations.
Satie give a short note about playing order as theme -> variations 1 -> theme -> variations 2.

We only runs repitition function during variation time. So our vexations, theme isn't change through 840 times, but variations changes by and by.
